Come fan yourselves in the cool shade of creativity with Sharon Arms Doucet. She will be teaching two writing workshops in June through Frederick L'Ecole des Arts in Grand Coteau/Arnaudville. Please pass the word:
Magic Beans and Fairy Dust: Writing for Children Saturday and (optional) Sunday June 13-14
Course Description:
Children's author Sharon Arms Doucet will lead us into the rich and wacky world of writing for children. Topics will include the suspension of adult disbelief, techniques to probe our own experience for subject matter and characters, and some of the nuts and bolts of the business of publishing. An optional Sunday session will be in workshop format, where participants will have an opportunity (if desired) to read something they've written for group feedback, as well as to learn from the feedback given to fellow writers. Bring your childhoods, your sense of humor, an inexpensive spiral notebook, and a sack lunch if desired.
MATERIALS: Bring your childhoods, your sense of humor, an inexpensive spiral notebook, and a sack lunch if desired.
AND:
MASTER FICTION CLASS CONVEYING THE SUN AND THE MOON Saturday, June 20
Novelist and children's author Sharon Arms Doucet will guide us on a journey into the writer's right and left brain, i.e. looking at both the art and craft of writing. Her process leans heavily on allowing the story to tell itself in the first draft while also relying on the ever-active editor to keep the overall structure in mind. She works with writing as an organic arising of some aspect of the writer's heart that wants to be examined, the discovery of which is part of the rich rewards of writing. This method leads to Robert Olen Butler's blurb of her novel Back before Dark as "A powerful crystal of a book with a bright surface and hidden depths." Morning and afternoon sessions will include time for writing and for focused discussion. Some writing experience beneficial but not crucial. Bring an inexpensive spiral notebook and a sack lunch if desired.
